Our 2008 “How to Grow Giant Pumpkins” DVD may be the most comprehensive guide to growing monster pumpkins ever produced. This DVD has up close, easy-to-follow instruction on virtually every aspect of growing huge pumpkins in the home garden.
Our updated seed starting segment shows how to use a soil probe to not only monitor, but also control the precise temperature around the seed. Other segments include soil prep, pollinization, early and late season plant and fruit protection and much more.
Also new this year is how to take root samples for Mycorrhizal Inoculation tests. Meet Doctor Michael Amaranthus, one of the World’s leading authorities on Mycorrhizae. Dr. Mike explains how Mycorrhizae is propagated, the benefits to plants, and how it can revolutionize agriculture in a special segment “changing Your World”. See the results of my own root samples and actual microscopic pictures of endomycorrhizal colonization.
Direct calcium application may have saved one of my best pumpkins from a possible blossom split. We demonstrate this technique. We even managed to show how to deal with a flat vine or ribbon vine and still come up with a very nice pumpkin!
Our DVD has a lot on pruning techniques and a vine management system, which is all sketched out showing the specifics for vine length, fruit positioning, and which structures to prune or keep.
We had our best season so far with a personal best of 1,462-pounds and a total of 6 official pumpkins over 1,000-pounds. We also have scenes of the two largest pumpkins of 2008 Worldwide. Quinn Werner is the Top Pumpkin Grower in the World over the past 5-years based on the AGGC yearly averages. Quinn sent us the images of his phenomenal 2008 season which includes 3 of the top 10 in the World.
“PATCH TOURS AND SCULPTED PUMPKINS”
Our 2nd DVD for 2008 highlights some of our most informative pumpkin patch visits with former World Record Holders and other giant pumpkin growers as well. We show visits to the patches of Quinn Werner, Jerry Rose, Geneva Emmons, Kirk Mombert, Alan Gibson, and many others. You will also see well over 100 sculpted pumpkins set to some of the most ghoulish Halloween music you ever heard. Displayed is the handiwork of some of the World’s finest giant pumpkin carvers.
Special lighting, music and sound effects create an awesome audio-visual experience.

HOLLAND’S LAND O’GIANTS 2008 SEEDSTOCK
1,462# : 407.5” (1,092 Martin X 998 Pukos) A new personal best for us. It was light orange - no green. We won 1st Place and a new site record at Uesegi Farms in Morgan Hilll, CA. The 998 cross plant produced our 1,190#. This could be a dynamic cross! The pumpkin weighed 3.4% over the chart, and the male cross went heavy as well.
1,262#: 395” (1,535.5 Glasier X 1,142 VanKooten) This was a cream colored fruit that had excellent late season growth (461 lbs. after September 1st). It had no stem cracks or weak areas. Although it was 2% under chart, the 1,142# VanKooten should put some “Heavy Genes” into this seedstock.
1,190#: 379.5” (998 Pukos X 1,041.5 McKie) This was a beautiful orange pumpkin that was still growing 5.6# per day at harvest. The plant was the male cross on many of our 2008 pumpkins. It went 4% heavy.
1,162#: 372.5” (1,161-05 Holland X 998 Pukos) It was a high, wide orange pumpkin. It was a 6-lobe that was the 3rd blossom out on the main. It was a late-set and was still growing 8.4#-a day at harvest, and went 7.3% heavy to the chart.
1,036#: 360” (1,161-07 Holland X 1,142 VanKooten) A cream-colored blocky pumpkin that was trouble free and a steady grower. It was a nice manageable plant, and went 6% heavy.
1,021#: 362.5” (1,289 Holland X 998 Pukos) This was a high-wide orange fruit picked early for the Puyallup Fair on September 5, and still gaining 8.7# a day. 2.3% heavy to the chart.
942#: 350” (1041.5 McKie X 1,384 Holland) A nice-deep orange pumpkin with a great shape. It had no cracks or trouble spots and was a vigorous plant with multiple fruit. 4.6% heavy.
1,144# dmg.: 379.5” (1,229-04 Holland X 998 Pukos) This was a very long orange pumpkin with great potential. It developed a pinhole at a rib/sag line interface while still growing well. Estimated weight from the chart.
